Tiruvarur or Thiruvarur district was formed in 1997 by combining taluks from Thanjavur & Nagapattinam districts. Agriculture makes the principal occupation of the Thiruvarur district with fertile land irrigated by the copious Cauvery river. Therefore, Thiruvarur is called “the Granary of South India”.

The protected Muthupet mangrove forest present in Thiruvarur is a natural beauty. And, historically Thiruvarur had eminent people in religion and art. The triumvirate of Carnatic music, Shri Thyagaraja Brahmam, Shri Muthuswamy Dheekshathar, and Shyma Shastri bring glory to the district. There are famous historical temples in Thiruveezhimizhalai, Thirupampuram, Thirumeichur, Srivanchiyam, Thillaivilagam, and Thirukkannamangai. An ancient mosque is present at Jambuvanodai near Muthupettai.

Thirvarur was one of the five traditional capitals of the prominent Chola empire during the 9th to 12th centuries. The stone inscriptions say Thiruvarur had been the capital of Kulothunga Chola’s (1070 – 1120 CE) reign, and it fell to Pandyas in the 13th century. Later, the Thiruvarur town was under the rule of the Nayaks, Vijayanagara Kings, and Marathas. Subsequently, the region fell to the French and it was later annexed by the British.
